EBT Billmeyer & Smalls Closed End Coal Dumps

CAD drawings by Greg Vaughn of the East Broad Top Railroad & Coal Company Coal Dumps built by Billmeyer & Smalls of York PA. These eight-wheeled, wooden closed-end cars had a capacity of 20,000 lbs and were acquired from 1873 to 1882.

These highly detailed drawings include two possible coal dump variants, a non-self-clearing version with a flat floor and no slope sheets, and a self-clearing version with slope sheets. It is unknown whether the original version of these cars were self-clearing or not, based on extensive research and examination of existing photographs. The cars were essentially "built" in CAD to match data from B&S advertising and typical construction practice, photographs and other sources. Five drawings are available:

  • dimensioned side, end, and top views of the non-self-clearing variant
  • dimensioned side, end, and top views of the self-clearing variant
  • nine-panel isometric views of details of the self-clearing variant in color
  • dimensioned side, end, and top views of the self-clearing variant in color
  • dimensioned drawings for major pieces of lumber and table of other lumber for the self-clearing variant

Each drawing is 12x18 inches, printed on 18x24 inch paper and shipped rolled in a mailing tube.
